Canciones Unamunianas

Unamunian Songs

1. Mediterránea

      Olivos, higueras, cipreses,
marmóreos montes pelados,
regatos sin fondo que rompen
al sol y a la luna los rayos.
      La abeja recoge la crema
de la flor del hueso del campo,
Platón alecciona a las ranas
en el mediterráneo charco.
      Las velas latinas recogen
arrebol teñido de ocaso,
cigarras de sol embriagadas
a Apolo desgranan su canto.
      Nítidos, férvidos crepúsculos,
que paren estrellas soñando,
la noche cobija a los dioses
náufragos en remoto océano.

1. Mediterranean

      Olive trees, fig trees, cypresses,
marble bare mountains,
bottomless streams that break
the sun and moon’s rays.
      The bee gathers the cream
from the flower of the field’s stone,
Plato teaches the frogs
in the Mediterranean puddle.
      The lateen sails gather
a sunset-tinged glow,
intoxicated sun cicadas
sing their song to Apollo.
      Clear, fervid twilights,
that give birth to stars dreaming,
the night shelters the gods
shipwrecked in a remote ocean.

2. Dulce ocaso

      Vuelvo a cantar de nuevo
mi primera canción
la que al brotar mi alma
con el alma brotó.
      Se abre al venir la noche
como una estrella en flor
que se cerró en el alba
anegada en el sol.
      Al alba de mi vida
cantando se cerró
y hoy en mi dulce ocaso
se me abre la canción.

2. Sweet sunset

      I sing again
my first song
the one that when my soul sprouted
with the soul sprouted.
      It opens with the coming of night
like a star in flower
that closed at dawn
drenched in the sun.
      At the dawn of my life
it closed singing
and today in my sweet sunset
the song opens to me.

3. Mar de amargura

      Mar salada de amargura
bajo el sol canta tu sal,
tu sal soleada canta
bajo el sol, tranquila mar.
      La amargura de la tierra
se hace en ti profundidad,
mar salada de amargura,
lacrimatorio final.
      Sin tu sal se pudriría
nuestra pobre humanidad,
mar de amargura soleada,
abismo de soledad.

3. Sea of bitterness

      Salty sea of bitterness
under the sun your salt sings,
your sunny salt sings
under the sun, calm sea.
      The bitterness of the earth
becomes a depth in you,
salty sea of bitterness,
final tear-jerker.
      Without your salt
our poor humanity would rot,
sea of sunny bitterness,
abyss of solitude.

4. Peregrino, peregrino

      Peregrino, peregrino,
¿te viste en la fuente clara?
Sueña el agua peregrina
con la roca desde el alba.
      Y el Sol peregrino sueña
al asomarse a tu alma,
te hace nacer los senderos
al nacer de la mañana.
      Toda ojos la tierra bebe
con sus ojos fresca el agua
de la fuente de la vida
que abre Moisés con su vara.
      Peregrino, peregrino,
mírate en la fuente clara,
que es en agua peregrina
donde el sendero te ganas.

4. Pilgrim, pilgrim

      Pilgrim, pilgrim,
did you see yourself in the clear fountain?
The pilgrim water dreams
of the rock since dawn.
      And the pilgrim Sun dreams
when it peeks into your soul,
it makes your paths be born
at the dawn of the morning.
      All eyes on earth drink
with fresh eyes the water
from the fountain of life
that Moses opens with his staff.
      Pilgrim, pilgrim,
look at yourself in the clear fountain,
which is in pilgrim water
where you find your way.

5. Camino de calvario

      Es celda mi camino,
camino solitario;
es celda del destino,
camino de calvario.
      Camino sólo abierto
al término profundo
donde comienza el puerto
al acabarse el mundo.
      Es mi camino celda
de ambos lados murada;
un eslabón que suelda
con el todo la nada.

5. Way of calvary

      My road is a cell,
a solitary road;
it is a cell of destiny,
way of calvary.
      A road only open
to the deep end
where the port begins
at the end of the world.
      My road is a cell
walled on both sides;
a link that welds
nothingness to everything.

6. La rueca del tiempo

      Al pie del molino de viento
hilaba la vieja su rueca,
miraba al sendero a lo lejos,
señero del cielo a la puerta.
      Pasaban las horas de arreo,
pasaban las nubes a vela,
quedaba tan sólo el sendero,
hilaba su copo la vieja.
      Cruzaba un milano en el cielo,
cruzaba una hormiga por tierra,
cruzaban las horas de arreo,
miraba al sendero la vieja.
      Hilaban las aspas al viento,
molía la vieja en su rueca,
llegaba la noche en silencio,
nacían en paz las estrellas;
      se alzaba hasta el cielo el sendero,
estrellas calzaban sus huellas,
dormían tranquilos los muertos
hilando sus sueños en tierra.

6. The spinning wheel of time

      At the foot of the windmill
the old lady was spinning her spinning wheel,
she looked at the path in the distance,
the beacon of heaven at the door.
      The hours of herding passed,
the clouds sailed by,
only the path remained,
the old lady was spinning her snowflake.
      A kite crossed the sky,
an ant crossed the ground,
the hours of herding passed,
the old lady looked at the path.
      The sails spun in the wind,
the old lady ground on her spinning wheel,
the night came in silence,
the stars were born in peace;
      the path rose to the sky,
stars walked their tracks,
the dead slept peacefully
spinning their dreams on the ground.

7. Besos que vienen riendo

      Nos partimos en un beso;
¡ay si el último será!
¡El corazón se nos parte
con las penas que nos da!
      Besos que vienen riendo
luego llorando se van,
y en ellos se va la vida
que nunca más volverá.
      Vuelve la vida —me dices—;
pero no la que se va:
nos partimos en un beso;
¡ay si el último será!

7. Kisses that come laughing

      We break in a kiss;
oh, if it will be the last!
Our hearts break
with the sorrows it gives us!
      Kisses that come laughing
then go away crying,
and in them goes life
that will never return.
      Life returns —you tell me—;
but not the one that goes away:
we break in a kiss;
oh, if it will be the last!

8. Pecho desnudo

      Pecho desnudo y dormido,
tendido como la mar,
sacaba a la luz oleaje
palpitando al respirar.
      Sombra de nube candada
por la brisa matinal,
sobre sus labios corría
una sonrisa fugaz.
      ¿En qué soñaba la niña?
Su vida no era soñar;
respiraba luz del cielo
esperando despertar.

8. Bare breast

      Bare and sleeping breast,
stretched out like the sea,
brought to light waves
throbbing as she breathed.
      Shadow of a cloud locked
by the morning breeze,
a fleeting smile
ran over her lips.
      What was the girl dreaming of?
Her life was not dreaming;
she breathed light from heaven
hoping to wake up.

9. Primero de mayo

      Primero de mayo
pasó sin desmayo;
florecen las flores
los alrededores;
primavera avanza;
medra la esperanza
y al brocal del cielo
azul de consuelo
florece la mar.

9. First of May

      The first of May
passed without fainting;
the flowers bloom
all around;
spring advances;
hope grows
and at the edge of the sky
blue with consolation
the sea blooms.

10. Agua

      Agua que el azul lavaste,
agua de serenidad,
agua que lavas el verde,
agua de conformidad,
      agua que pasó el molino,
rueda de vuelta a empezar,
agua llovida del cielo,
agua de dulce pasar,
      agua que lleva mis sueños
en tu regazo a la mar,
agua que pasas soñando,
tu pesar es tu quedar.

10. Water

      Water that washed away the blue,
water of serenity,
water that washes away the green,
water of conformity,
      water that passed the mill,
wheel back to start,
water rained from the sky,
water of sweet passage,
      water that carries my dreams
in your lap to the sea,
water that you pass dreaming,
your sorrow is your remaining.

11. Cantábanme las estrellas

      Íbame a espigar estrellas;
las cerní con mis pestañas;
—soñaba y era de noche—
me las guardé en las entrañas.
      Cantábanme las estrellas,
con sus alas las cigarras,
y la luz de sus canciones
iban brizándome el alma.
      Y el alma se me hizo cielo
y el cielo se me hizo alma;
en medio de las estrellas
cantaban de Dios las alas.

11. The stars sang to me

      I went to glean stars;
I sifted them with my eyelashes;
—I was dreaming and it was night—
I kept them in my entrails.
      The stars sang to me,
with their wings the cicadas,
and the light of their songs
went to light my soul.
      And my soul became heaven
and heaven became my soul;
in the midst of the stars
the wings of God sang.

12. Castilla Madre

      Calmoso el toro, dobla el morrillo;
la media luna se pliega al suelo;
ligera nube, gentil cigüeña
roza su sombra sobre el berrendo.
      Los grillos rezan siesta prolífica,
la paz se alarga a todos vientos;
sobre la tierra dormida en verde
de primavera canta el silencio.

12. Mother Castile

      At the foot of the mountain oak
I covered my dream-filled eyes,
I dreamed of the oak tree, of the plain,
leaves of the abyss that seal the sky.
      Mother Castile, of sweet rock,
puckered mouth; strong breasts
to the sun that tans the clear foreheads
and at the foot the mirror of Duero father.
      Calmly the bull, bends his neck;
the half moon folds to the ground;
light cloud, gentle stork
brushes its shadow over the pronghorn.
      The crickets pray a prolific nap,
peace stretches to all winds;
over the earth asleep in green
of spring silence sings.

13. Los sueños del soñador

      En los brazos de un olmo cantaba
anidado un ruiseñor;
a sus pies un muchacho soñaba
dormido con el amor.
      En la copa la brisa aventaba
los cantares del cantor;
entre raíces el agua llevaba
los sueños del soñador.

13. The dreams of the dreamer

      A nightingale nestled
in the arms of an elm tree;
at its feet a boy dreamed
asleep of love.
      In the treetops the breeze blew
the songs of the singer;
among the roots the water carried
the dreams of the dreamer.

14. Canto de mar

      Canto de mar que besa
a la tierra en los labios,
la brisa está el follaje
tañéndole a los álamos.
      La brisa la melena
a las olas, al paso,
besó, blanca, empolvada,
con sal de fondo amargo.
      Y aquí a las olas verdes
les da —dulce regalo—
el beso de las blancas
hojas del océano.
      A verdor y blancura
los unce en un abrazo
el azul que a la brisa
abriga en su regazo.

14. Sea song

      Sea song that kisses
the earth on the lips,
the breeze is the leaves
ringing the poplars.
      The breeze kissed
the waves, as it passed,
white, dusty,
with salt from a bitter bottom.
      And here to the green waves
it gives —sweet gift—
the kiss of the white
leaves of the ocean.
      The greenness and whiteness
are yoked in an embrace
by the blue that shelters
the breeze in its lap.

15. La palabra es un ángel

      Me besó en sueños un ángel
en la boca; al despertar
gusto de azul en los labios
de gloria en el paladar.
      Hecha corazón la lengua
se puso sola a cantar;
las palabras son latidos,
son las olas de la mar.
      La lengua nos da lenguaje
que el corazón no nos da;
el lenguaje nos da nombre,
el nombre da eternidad.
      Una palabra es un ángel,
mensajero de verdad,
de la verdad que se sueña,
la verdad original.

15. The word is an angel

      In my dreams an angel kissed me
on the mouth; when I woke up
a taste of blue on my lips
of glory on my palate.
      The tongue, made heart,
began to sing alone;
words are heartbeats,
they are the waves of the sea.
      The tongue gives us language
that the heart does not give us;
language gives us a name,
the name gives eternity.
      A word is an angel,
messenger of truth,
of the truth that is dreamed,
the original truth.

16. Noche serena del alma

      Noche del cielo desnudo,
desnuda noche del cielo,
consolación del desvelo
de tener que alzar escudo.
      Noche serena del alma,
noche del alma serena,
alma noche toda llena
de serenidad de calma.
      Noche de Cristo dormido,
vela su sueño la Luna,
hácenle estrellas la cuna,
ponen la cruz en olvido.

16. Serene night of the soul

      Night of the naked sky,
naked night of the sky,
consolation of the sleeplessness
of having to raise a shield.
      Serene night of the soul,
night of the serene soul,
soul night full
of serenity of calm.
      Night of Christ asleep,
the Moon watches over his sleep,
they make stars for his cradle,
they put the cross into oblivion.

17. Golondrina, peregrina

      Golondrina, peregrina
¿dónde duermes en invierno?
¿Hay en tu cielo una esquina
donde guardes nido eterno?
      Vuelas tú, no vuela el nido;
sol de cielo en primavera,
azul dulce y derretido,
golondrina forastera.
      Tú volverás con las flores
a tu nido aquí, el de paso,
y nos traerás los amores
que se duermen al ocaso.
      ¿Y el eterno amor del cielo
que de amores nos consuela,
el muerto inmortal anhelo,
el del nido que no vuela?

17. Swallow, peregrine

      Swallow, peregrine
where do you sleep in winter?
Is there a corner in your sky
where you keep an eternal nest?
      You fly, the nest does not fly;
sun of the sky in spring,
sweet and melting blue,
stranger swallow.
      You will return with the flowers
to your nest here, the one of passage,
and you will bring us the loves
that fall asleep at dusk.
      And the eternal love of heaven
that consoles us with loves,
the immortal dead longing,
that of the nest that does not fly?

18. Zamora

      Zamora de Doña Urraca,
Zamora del Cid mancebo,
Zamora del rey Don Sancho,
¡ay Bellido traicionero!
      Zamora de torres de ojos,
Zamora del recio ensueño,
mi románica Zamora,
poso en Castilla del cielo
      de las leyendas heroicas
del lejano romancero,
Zamora dormida en brazos
corrientes del padre Duero.

18. Zamora

      Zamora of Doña Urraca,
Zamora of the young Cid,
Zamora of King Don Sancho,
oh, treacherous Bellido!
      Zamora of towers of eyes,
Zamora of the strong dream,
my romanesque Zamora,
I rest in Castile of the sky
      of the heroic legends
of the distant ballads,
Zamora asleep in the arms
flow of the Duero father.

Miguel de Unamuno (1864-1936)
