¡Oh llama de amor viva,
que tiernamente hieres
de mi alma en el más profundo centro!
Pues ya no eres esquiva,
acaba ya, si quieres;
rompe la tela de este dulce encuentro.
¡Oh cauterio suave!
¡Oh regalada llama!
¡Oh mano blanda! ¡Oh toque delicado,
que a vida eterna sabe,
y toda deuda paga!,
matando, muerte en vida la has trocado.
¡Oh lámparas de fuego,
en cuyos resplandores
las profundas cavernas del sentido,
que estaba oscuro y ciego,
con extraños primores
calor y luz dan junto a su Querido!
¡Cuán manso y amoroso
recuerdas en mi seno,
donde secretamente sólo moras;
y en tu aspirar sabroso,
de bien y gloria lleno,
cuán delicadamente me enamoras!
O thou living flame of love
that tenderly does injure
of my inner soul the deepest core!
Since thou art no longer bashful,
end now, if i’s thy desire;
tear the veil of this sweet conversation.
O sweet cautery!
O pleasant flame!
O soft hand! O delicate touch
that of eternal life tastes
and all debts pays!,
killing, thou bartered death for life!
O, ye lamps of fire,
in whose resplendent glow
the deep caverns of the sense,
which was dark and blind,
with rare finesse
heat and light give together with the Loved!
How tender and loving,
I do remember thou in my breast,
where alone and in secret thou livest;
and with your savoury breath,
of goodness and glory plentiful,
how delicately thou makes me love thee!
En una noche oscura
con ansias en amores inflamada,
¡oh dichosa ventura!,
salí sin ser notada,
estando ya mi casa sosegada.
A escuras y segura,
por la secreta escala disfrazada,
¡oh dichosa ventura!,
a escuras y en celada,
estando ya mi casa sosegada.
En la noche dichosa,
en secreto, que nadie me veía,
ni yo miraba cosa,
sin otra luz y guía
sino la que en el corazón ardía.
Aquesta me guiaba
más cierto que la luz del mediodía,
a donde me esperaba
quien yo bien me sabía,
en parte donde nadie parecía.
¡Oh noche que guiaste!,
¡oh noche amable más que la alborada!,
¡oh noche que juntaste
Amado con amada,
amada en el Amado transformada!
En mi pecho florido,
que entero para él sólo se guardaba,
allí quedó dormido,
y yo le regalaba,
y el ventalle de cedros aire daba.
El aire de la almena,
cuando yo sus cabellos esparcía,
con su mano serena
en mi cuello hería
y todos mis sentidos suspendía.
Quedeme y olvideme,
el rostro recliné sobre el Amado;
cesó todo, y dejeme,
dejando mi cuidado
entre las azucenas olvidado.
Upon a darkened night,
inflamed by my yearnings for love,
O blissful joy!
I went out unseen,
after my house had become tranquil.
In the darkness and safe,
by the secret ladder shrouded,
O blissful joy!
In the darkness and in a sallet,
after my house had become tranquil.
In the blissful night,
in secret, seen by nobody,
not seeing anything,
without a light or guide
other than the one burning in my heart.
This one light guided me,
more surely than the midday’s light,
to where was waiting for me
the one I knew well,
there where nobody was to be.
O night that led’st me!
O gentle night more than the dawn!
O night that joined
Lover with Lov’d,
the she-Loved in the he-Lov’d transformed!
Upon my flowery breast,
which was kept full for him only,
there did he fall asleep,
and I caressed him,
and the swaying of the cedars fanned us.
The air of the battlement,
when I his locks spread,
with its serene touch
in my neck hurt
and all my senses blunted.
I dwelt and forgot,
my face reclining over the Lov’d;
everything ceased and I slumbered,
leaving my care
amid the lilies ignored.
Del Verbo divino
la Virgen preñada
viene de camino.
¿Si le dais posada?
By the divine Word
the Virgin pregnant
comes along the road.
Will you give her lodging?
Olvido de lo criado,
memoria del Criador,
atención a lo interior,
y estarse amando al Amado.
Oblivion of things created,
remembrance of the Creator,
attention to everything within,
and continual love for the Loved.
St. John of the Cross (1542-1591)
